Dynastic Life on the Oracle Bones of Yin Xu

The Shang royal court inscribed divination questions on turtle shells and animal bones, leaving valuable records of activities such as warfare, harvests, and ritual sacrifice.

An imagined river-valley town: farmers tend fields, potters shape clay, and reed boats travel along canals.

The story

Oracle bones excavated at Yin Xu record the late Shang royal court's inquiries about ritual sacrifice, agriculture, military campaigns, and weather. They reveal a mature writing system and are important material for studying Shang politics and beliefs. Writing, bronze ritual vessels, and large buildings together reflect the royal court's ability to organize resources. However, the oracle bones mainly come from royal divination activities and cannot directly represent the lives of all inhabitants; nor do they mean that other forms of recording had not existed earlier.

Elsewhere in the world

During the period when late Shang oracle bones were in use, Olmec communities along the Gulf coast of Mexico were building ceremonial centers.
