The story

Under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong on July 1, 1997, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was established, and the Basic Law took effect at the same time. The one country, two systems arrangement preserved Hong Kong’s existing capitalist system and way of life within a single country and set out the special administrative region’s autonomy and institutions. The map marks the area around the Convention and Exhibition Centre, where Hong Kong’s handover ceremony took place.

Elsewhere in the world

Hong Kong connects mainland China with international networks of finance, shipping, and commerce; the handover also ended British colonial administration in Hong Kong.
